Proper car seat safety is crucial for protecting children in the event of an accident. Here’s everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and using car seats to keep your family safe on the road.
1. Choose the Right Car Seat
Choosing the right car seat for your child is the first step in ensuring their safety. The type of car seat needed depends on your child’s age, weight, and height:
Infant Car Seats: Designed for newborns and small infants, these seats typically face the rear of the vehicle. They are best for children up to 22-35 pounds, depending on the model.
Convertible Car Seats: These seats can be used in both rear-facing and forward-facing positions, making them versatile as your child grows. Keep children rear-facing as long as possible—until they reach the seat's weight or height limit.
Booster Seats: Once your child outgrows their forward-facing car seat (usually around age 4), they should use a booster seat until the vehicle’s seat belts fit properly, typically between ages 8-12.
2. Install the Car Seat Correctly
